B.A.W.N (Chicago) — R. Kelly is facing a new federal charge concerning his marriage to the late singer Aaliyah, his teenage protege, who was just 15 at the time. Federal prosecutors in the eastern district of New York say Kelly, then 27, and others bribed a public official in Illinois to create a fake ID for a “Jane Doe” on the day before the Aug. 31, 1994, wedding.
According to established reports their Illinois wedding certificate gave Aaliyah Haughton’s age as 18. Kelly’s former tour manager and personal assistant, Demetrius Smith, admitted to obtaining the fake ID in Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly. “I had papers forged for them when Aaliyah was underaged,” he said, per the Guardian. He told the same to journalist Jim DeRogatis, who included the claim in his book Soulless:
The Case Against R. Kelly, reports NPR. Kelly’s lawyer, however, has put the blame on Aaliyah. In January, Steven Greenberg said Aaliyah “did not claim to be 15. And in order to get married, she had to lie about her age.” He added Kelly had “no idea” about her true age. Their marriage was annulled months later.
Kelly’s troubles are compounding daily as he was arrested on federal sex charges in Chicago nearly five months after he was released on bail for additional sexual abuse charges brought by Illinois prosecutors, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
The 52-year-old was arrested by Homeland Security Investigation agents and NYPD Public Safety Task Force, officials told News 4, out of New York.
In July of this year a 13-count indictment was handed down in federal court for the Northern District of Illinois and that charge included charges of child pornography, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice, U.S. attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick told The Associated Press.
Spokespeople from the NYPD and Homeland Security Investigations declined to comment on the arrest. Calls to the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn were not immediately returned.
There are separate federal indictments filed in both Chicago and Brooklyn, according to a senior law enforcement official, and a court appearance in Chicago could come later Friday.
Mr. Kelly has declared his innocence from day one,” said the singers Manager Darrel Johnson. In addition Johnson says, he has been working with the R&B star for six months. “I’ve seen nothing, and I do mean nothing, that would lead to any type of guilt.”
In February, Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He was accused of abusing four women. (BAWN) (GLG)
